A dissertation title is the first impression that your reader will get about your academic work. In a limited number of words, you should clearly inform what your paper will be about. Therefore, you should do everything possible not to mislead or confuse other researchers who will seek for the works in your field of study.
As a rule, dissertation titles consist of two parts separated by a colon. The first part is used to report on general information while the second one is more specific. If you want to name your paper effectively, remember to use proper words and focus on essential information from your research project. The following method will help you decide what data should be mentioned to make an effective dissertation title.
The purpose of your research usually covers the general area of interest and the focus of your paper. The general area of interest is a broader theme of your dissertation, and the focus is a narrower aspect that you want to explore. For example, you may research networking (the focus) as a marketing strategy (the area of interest), and these data should be necessarily mentioned in your dissertation title. As a rule, the purpose of research is stated in the first section of the title.
It is necessary that you mention what research strategy was used in the process of work. Namely, these may be qualitative methods, quantitative methods, or both. This information is always placed in the second part of the title, after the colon.
If your dissertation has a practical value, and there are some significant outcomes that you want to share, don’t forget to include these data as well. This information can be included both before and after the colon.
This information should be left for the main body of your paper where it will be clarified. Otherwise, it may lead to confusion (unless it is an abbreviation that is generally known.)
Teasing or humorous style can be used only with the permission of your professor. While it is acceptable in the arts and humanities, it won’t be understood in the scientific research projects.
Remember to use the key terms and phrases from your paper.
